Pedestrian safety tips

Walking rather than driving provides a variety of benefits, but also a variety of risks. Choosing to walk rather than drive is a good form of exercise and is better for the environment. However, walking does mean there is a danger of being injured in a car accident when near motor vehicles. Not all drivers are as cautious as they should be and sometimes this can lead to pedestrian-involved accidents.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can help ensure your safety when walking.

Tips

There are a few steps you can take to help make sure you are being as safe as possible when walking near traffic or cars. You can keep safe by:

  • Using sidewalks and crosswalks where possible
  • Obeying traffic signals and laws
  • Be visible by wearing bright colors and reflective gear at night
  • Try to walk in well-lit areas
  • Avoid distractions — stay off your phone and other devices when walking
  • Stay vigilant and keep tabs on cars and other motor vehicles
What to do if there is an accident

While walking is a good alternative to driving, it is no secret it can be dangerous. In 2015, over 70,000 pedestrians were injured in a motor-vehicle-involved accident. If you are injured in a car accident while walking, you may want to pursue a personal injury claim to recover damages for your suffering. You could be entitled to damages that could help you cover medical bills, lost wages and even emotional suffering.

Though there is a risk being a pedestrian, especially near cars and traffic, this should not stop you from opting to walk rather than drive. Furthermore, if you were injured by a car while walking, you have options.
