Elderly distracted drivers can cause car accidents

Distracted Louisiana drivers are a danger to themselves and everyone else on the road. When a person is looking at his or her phone, even for a second, it significantly increases the chances for car accidents. While drivers of any age are susceptible to driving while distracted, studies find that elderly drivers may be especially prone to the various things that can distract them while behind the wheel.

Many cars now have the capability of connecting with phones. This means that drivers can operate their phones and even some car functions by using their voices. Even with voice commands, however, a driver can be distracted. Studies show that older drivers are more likely than younger drivers to become distracted by hands-free functions.

A person can be distracted, even when he or she is looking at the road. When using hands-free technology, a person’s mind is on something else besides the road. Cognitive distraction can be just as dangerous as someone who is holding the phone in his or her hand. Studies actually show that when older drivers take their eyes off the road due to look at their phone, they do so for longer stretches of time than younger drivers.

No matter the age of the driver, distracted driving is unacceptable. When car accidents happen as the result of the negligent or reckless actions of another person, Louisiana victims have the right to seek compensation for their monetary damages, including pain and suffering.
